Trimix allowed on final dive of Tec Deep

As a direct result of the discussions at the DSAT Tec Conference on 30 March 2009 in New Jersey, USA organised by the DSAT Technical Diving Division, there is an immediate standards change to the Tec Deep Diver course. Tec Deep Instructors now have the option of applying normoxic trimix to Dive 12 of the course if they are a Tec Trimix Instructor. The 3rd Quarter 2009 Training Bulletin will announce this, but instructors may begin implementing it immediately. A letter is about to be sent to all TecRec instructors detailing how the standard has been changed.

  2. Great news, this means that students can make a 50m dive on dive 11 on air then make the same dive on eg Tmx21/35 and feel the difference for themselves..a great way to promote the Tec Trimix course…well done..shame we cannot take them to 55m as TDI does we lose quite a few to this! Question: If Normoxic Trimix is used on Dive 12 of the tec deep course will this make dive 3 of the Tec Trmic course optional as would be dives 2 & 4 in the case of regular DSAT Tec Deep Divers??? Interesting idea.

What we need now is an Advanced Trimix course to compete with TDI that states 100m on the cert card…now that’s marketable!!

    • Do we really need an advanced Trimix Course to compete with TDI.

The DSAT course certification depth is 75M and uses any suitable mix wether it be normoxic or Anoxic.Unlike the TDI course which requires the advanced trimix to extend the range and the ue of Anoxic gas mixes. The DSAT course advises that there is no real limit to the depth within Trimix diving only your own ability and acceptance of the grater risks osed by such depths. Shouldn’t your range should be extended patiently & slowly by diving with more experienced trimix divers. Starting in conditions comparable to those in which you qualified with respect to depth temperature and visibility.
Surely the DSAT course better equips divers to extend their range beyond certification depths. As I remember it the TDI advanced Trimix course only requires 2 of the 4 required dives to be deeper than 55MSW. What benefit is there in achieving a qualification to 100MSW when you only dived to 60MSW on your qualification dives.
I believe and this is only my personal opinion that the DSAT course is more than a match for the TDI course and if marketed well will win over the TDI course everytime even without the 100M depth written on the cert card.
How many newly qualified trimix divers are ready to conduct a 100M dive at the end of the course. 75M to 100M is a relatively short jump in measurable depth but the decompression and isobaric counterdiffusion, HPNS, and thermal exposure concerns are a much bigger issue at this depth and should be built up to slowly. Don’t you think that neither 4 or 8 dives can equip a diver for this.

Thanks for your comments, Rod. At present the use of trimix on dive 12 will not replace any of the dives from the Tec Trimix course. However we will be looking at the links between the Tec Deep and Tec Trimix courses, so please keep checking the blog for future updates on this. At present we do not have any plans for an Advanced Trimix course within the DSAT system.
Please feel free to post any further questions on this subject here, or email me at rich.somerset@padi.co.uk if you would prefer.

  4. Hi,
Im sure Steve means Hypoxic and not Anoxic.
As regards to my suggestion on an Advanced Trimix course I am just listening to what my customers want…all my DSAT Trimix divers have continued their education to TDI Advanced Trimix…
Im not sure but having done a few TDI courses as a student myself on CCRs the depth on the card is down to the instructor and they are not allowed to put deeper than you have been on the course!
TDI changed the max depth of the Advanced Trimix course to 100m from 90m due to demand again from customers.

The quality of the DSAT course is without doubt superior! So why not have students continue their deep adventures under supervision…at this level divers tend to favour the same instructor as trust is built so a good business opportunity that is a win win situation.. I will work on a distinctive for the moment I am busy with an Advanced Wreck distinctive, again asked for by my students…who would prefer to complete a DSAT Course than a TDI one. I had a student two years ago complete her DSAT Tec Trimix AFTER she had completed her TDI Advanced Trimix because she preferred the DSAT way. She since made a record breaking dive for Israel and Jordan to 131m and is the talk of the forums in Israel!!

Looking forward to hearing what happened at the DSAT seminar in Bristol

    regards
    Rod
